Editorial Platform — 2025
Field Notes
A reading platform for long-form environmental journalism, built for attention rather than scroll depth.
Role — Editorial Design, Front-end
Overview
Field Notes publishes four long pieces a year. Their old site borrowed its shape from a news feed, which suited neither the writing nor the reader.
We designed a single-column reading experience with a measured column, real footnotes, and no interruption between the first line and the last.
Challenge
Long reporting sits alongside data, field photography and source documents. All of it had to coexist without breaking the reading rhythm.
Approach
One measure, one scale, and a margin that carries everything secondary — notes, figures, credits — so the main column is never interrupted.
Outcome
Median read time more than doubled, and the margin system now carries the print annual with no redesign.
