Northline

A journey planner for a Nordic rail operator, rebuilt around a single clear question: when do I leave?

Role — Product Design, Design System

Overview

Northline runs regional rail across three countries. Their planner had grown into a dense grid of times, transfers and fare classes that travellers scanned rather than read.

We reduced the interface to one decision at a time — where, when, which seat — and let everything else recede until it was asked for.

Challenge

Six years of feature additions had left the booking flow with four competing entry points and no shared visual language between web and platform screens.

Approach

We rebuilt the flow around a single search field, then designed a compact type and colour system that survives both a phone in daylight and a departure board at forty metres.

Outcome

Booking completion rose across every device class, and the design system now ships to five internal teams from one package.
